What can oral contraceptives do
Apart from preventing pregnancy, oral contraceptives can also be prescribed for the following reasons:
Treatment for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis or uterine fibroids.
Lower the risk of ovarian, uterine and colon cancers.
Stop unwanted hair growth.
Reduce migraines or control hot flashes during the transition period into menopause.
How do birth control pills work?
Birth control pills contain two important hormones: estrogen and progestin.
These hormones prevent pregnancy by:
- Stopping or reducing ovulation in a woman
- Thickening the cervical mucus to keep sperm from entering the uterus
- Thinning the uterus lining which makes it difficult for a fertilised egg to attach itself to the uterus
At Artisan Health, we offer two types of birth control pills:
Combination pills (known as oral contraceptives or COCs)
These contain estrogen and progestin and work to change the hormone balance in the body. They prevent a woman from ovulating.
Progestin-only pills (known as POPs or mini pills)
These contain only progestin. They thicken the cervical mucus and thin the lining of the uterus and prevent the sperm from reaching the egg. At times, POPs are known to suppress ovulation.

What results can I expect from taking birth control pills?
In order for birth control pills to work best for you, you should:
- Only engage in sexual intercourse after 7 consecutive days of taking the pill (it can take up to 7 days for birth control pills to become effective)
- Remember to take your pill every day on time – failure to do so can increase your risk of pregnancy
If you are taking birth control pills to control acne or abnormal menstruation, take note that you will only see signs of effectiveness after 3 to 4 months.
If you miss a pill, it’s important to take it as soon as possible before following the usual daily dose as planned.
